Acknowledging the four directions – east, north, west and south – is a traditional way of opening space for ceremony.
You may like to have the celebrant or other special people call in the blessings of each of the directions and its corresponding element (east – air, north – fire, west – water, south – earth) at the start of your ceremony.
Alternately, you might like a simple orienting in space, here where we stand somewhere in the Perth region of Western Australia. To the east – the rest of the continent, the easterly winds that blow hot in summer. To the north – the red earth, the midday sun. To the west – the Indian Ocean. To the south – the tall forests.
